The Education and Care courses at Australian Workplace Training are about successfully and safely working in Early Childhood Services and in Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) services.
As from 2012, all Early Childhood Services require that all staff have (or are working towards) a minimum qualification. The Certificate III course is the minimum qualification which includes food safety & hygiene, planning, play, child development, and first aid etc.
- In an Early Childhood Service, the Cert III educator works under a supervisor who is qualified with a Diploma or higher.
- OSHC services are, more often than not, part of a primary school. If you always work under the supervision of a qualified educator, you do not currently need a mandatory qualification, although this may change when the government reviews this policy. Employees must have qualifications if they work alone, are a supervisor or a director of the OSHC service.
As a worker:
Sector | Qualification |
Early Childhood Services | Certificate III (mandatory) Diploma or higher |
OSHC Services | Certificate III Certificate IV Diploma or higher |
Management and supervisory roles in an Early Childhood and OSHC Services are reflected by the Diploma and higher qualifications.
As a Director/Supervisor:
Sector | Qualification |
Early Childhood Services | Diploma (mandatory minimum) or higher |
OSHC Services | Certificate IV Diploma or higher |
